Neighborhood House – Youth Literacy Leader (LitMN)

Founded in 1897 by the women of Mount Zion Temple, Neighborhood House has supported families from over 50 cultural and ethnic populations in times of transition or need. With each successive wave of newcomers, the demographic makeup of our service population has changed. What has not changed is our commitment to helping families move from “survive” to “thrive.” Today, Neighborhood House helps immigrants, refugees and others find pathways out of poverty through programming in Basic Needs and Lifelong Learning. All our programs and services are offered free of charge to our participants. The VISTA member will take part in the integration of literacy services into the youth programming. Many of the participants who attend programming come from under-served populations and find a welcoming community and opportunities at Neighborhood house. A keystone for success for just about anyone is the ability to read, write, and express one’s ideas and feelings. Unfortunately, for many of the participants that attend programming, this is a skill that is insufficient. Programs have built relationships with participants. This program will expand on that relationship and attempt to draw in family members. Programs have successfully assisted with social and emotional learning. This program will build on that and develop confidence in skill areas that are underdeveloped. Programs have improved the community within the building. This program will expand that success to the families and communities where the youth come from. Why should you serve at Neighborhood House? (This is what our staff says!) Professional development opportunities; Diversity of staff, participants, and volunteers; Ability to work across programs and departments; Flexibility of time and work space; Openness to new ideas and creativity; Continual learning; Great balance of teamwork and autonomy; Collaboration across departments; Organizational reputation and heritage; Free parking and on bus lines.
