African American Youth Harvest Foundation Summer Associate

African American Youth Harvest Foundation (AAYHF) is positioned to effectively leverage community resources to address significant barriers impacting the quality of life for residents in the Eastern Crescent of City of Austin. Since 2006, AAYHF, a community-based organization, spearheads mission-aligned and strategic collaborative initiatives to ensure low barrier access to vital resources intended to transition youth and their families to self-sufficiency and community defined success that effectually addresses the social determinants of health, educational success and economic stability throughout the most vulnerable neighborhoods in the City of Austin and Travis County. Vulnerabilities made evident by notable disparities and disproportionalities fueled by the conditions in which these community members are born, age, grow, work, live, and the wider set of forces and systems shaping the conditions of their daily life. Research indicates 35% of African American and Hispanic children in Travis County live below the federal poverty level. The African American population, as a percentage of overall population in Austin, has decreased consistently over the past 45 years. Gentrification in Austin’s core is causing lower income families further east, with a large concentration of African American families now living in and around Manor, TX. AAYHF has traditionally focused on middle- and high-school aged youth. However, AAYHF consistently finds that African American, Hispanic and low-income youth served are often 2 to 3 grade levels behind in their academic progress by the time they reach the middle school years.

Member Duties : Three summer associates will serve for 10 weeks to address the issue of summer learning loss by assisting in the coordination and delivery of AAYHF’s six-week Urban University summer program. In addition, summer associates will work with AAYHF’s VISTA supervisor to develop a short survey to assess the summer and out-of-school time needs of the families served by AAYHF, including program areas, days/times, frequency, etc. – in order to support their children’s development while allowing parents to pursue workforce training, assistance and advancement opportunities. VISTA would be expected to connect to relevant coalitions and groups working on summer and expanded learning strategies. Summer associate will help assess opportunities for partnership between AAYHF, Manor ISD, the City of Manor, the City of Austin, Travis County, and other area partners to address an array of whole-child needs.
