MTCC - Neighbors In Need - Veterans
365 veterans in the Flathead Valley live 150% below the poverty line. Nationally, approximately 7% of homeless populations are veterans. The opening of the Day Center within the Gateway Community Center for the homeless Veterans in the Kalispell community will give Veterans a safe place to go during the day for basic services, including laundry, cell phone charging, computer access, showers, access to health care, and counseling. In 2015, the unemployment rate for Montana veterans was 5.2%, compared to 3.9% for nonveterans. Increasing Veteran access to college and educational opportunities will increase the Veteran’s employability. This project will help veterans build pathways out of poverty by connecting these populations to well rounded services including educational opportunities. The Gateway Community Center is a human services campus located in the former Gateway West Mall that provides services to residents from every community in Flathead County. This facility provides a unique opportunity to bring together nonprofit service providers to better meet the needs of clients who currently have to search for services scattered throughout the greater Kalispell area. The VISTA will build services for veterans to help move out of poverty with the creation of the Day Center, as well as strengthen services for veterans in the 19 nonprofits based in the Gateway Community Center.
