ANTHC - Rural Energy Initiative
Water and sewer service is often expensive in rural Alaska, regularly reaching upwards of $200/month in northern communities. Lack of economies of scale, high fuel and electric costs and elevated energy demands combine to drive prices up. The mission of our department is to make access to water and sewer service more affordable for rural Alaskans by reducing the associated energy costs. In this position, you will have the opportunity to serve Alaska Native communities and work toward this objective primarily through development and deployment of tailored educational materials and outreach. To best equip you for this educational role, this position will provide an opportunity to learn about the fascinating energy “ecosystem” of rural Alaska where the remoteness of communities, extreme terrain, and climate drive us to innovate. You will work with a passionate team of individuals to learn how energy efficiency, renewable energy, and advanced microgrid technology can be applied to make water and sewer service, and energy in general, more affordable and sustainable for rural residents. Note: To serve in this position, in accordance with the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, you must not have a criminal conviction(s) of murder, manslaughter, or sex crimes or crimes against children or vulnerable adults. The following must also be provided (and can be obtained free of cost through ANTHC Employee Health post-hire): •evidence of screening for tuberculosis exposure and infection as shown by a negative PPD, negative IGRA, or in cases where the PPD or IGRA is positive, a baseline chest x-ray, •proof of immunity/vaccination for hepatitis B and influenza (annually) or a signed declination of these vaccinations, and •proof of immunity/vaccination against rubella and rubeolla (measles), mumps, and varicella chicken pox.

You will facilitate pilot rounds of outreach delivery, refine content and delivery methods and assess outreach impact. The ideal candidate will be comfortable engaging with rural community members on issues related to health, water/sewer services and energy and have the ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with individuals from a wide array of cultural, educational, socioeconomic and linguistic backgrounds. Be prepared to travel up to 20% of the time to rural communities by small aircraft. You should be creative, flexible and motivated to work independently under minimal supervision. Teaching and graphic design skills would be valuable. Experience living and working in rural Alaska Native communities would also be a plus.
