LSI Refugee Family Wellness Program VISTA

Lutheran Services in Iowa’s (LSI) Refugee Family Wellness Program is a new grouping of programs within Refugee Community Services at LSI that includes services to older adults, families, and youth. The goal of the program is to expand LSI’s offering of mental and behavioral health services that are designed specifically for the needs and backgrounds of recently arrived refugee populations. This will include integrating mental and behavioral health services into LSI’s existing array of Refugee Community Services, expanding staff knowledge and capacity to provide culturally, linguistically, and trauma-sensitive services across all programs, and to develop a model for service delivery that can be expanded in Des Moines and replicated in other areas of the state. The AmeriCorps VISTA member will work with internal and external partners to develop a new refugee-specific mental and behavioral health program that addresses the needs of recently arrived refugee families and other vulnerable populations. The member will also work with staff and community partners to enhance existing programs to older adults through the expansion of health and wellness education and activities. The ideal candidate will have an interest in social work, education, community outreach, and serving the refugee community in Des Moines. In addition, prior experience working with English language learners is desirable but not required. The candidate should be proficient in basic Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, and Outlook) and have strong written and verbal communication skills. Member Duties: The VISTA member’s service will focus on the following key objectives: • Work with community volunteers and community groups to expand health and wellness activities provided at LSI and the Central Senior Center. • Expand educational opportunities and outreach of the Refugee Family Wellness Program through parenting education sessions.
