Disaster Fund Development Wharton Cty Recovery OneStar VISTA

Wharton County Recovery Team’s goal is to take an active role in coordinating at every step of the disaster response process – managing the chaos of the flood of volunteers and donations in the immediate wake of a crisis, coordinating rebuilding efforts as our community attempts to return to a state of normalcy, and helping to develop new affordable housing and aid in mitigation and disaster preparedness efforts to help lessen the impact of the next natural disaster. Wharton, which sits on the Colorado River and was the nexus of Harvey’s damage. In Wharton County, 46% of homes were flooded. Hurricane Harvey recovery will last for several years to come. Given the lack of resources in our low-income community, many survivors will need to rely on volunteers to rebuild their homes. In addition, research shows that natural disasters disproportionality impact poor and marginalized communities and that those living in poverty struggle the most to recover. The goal of WCRT is to provide that long-term rebuilding infrastructure to offer recovery assistance to all individuals, families and communities more effectively and efficiently until recovery is completed. To help with preparedness and resiliency of Texas communities, WCRT is searching for a motivated individual to help develop fundraising methods and communications.
