Peer Recovery Supporter

A peer recovery supporter is a person who is in recovery and provides a “recovery mentor” for those who are going through treatment or are new to recovery. This concept is in an emerging field that is being used consistently in treatment facilities, peer recovery centers, recovery houses and in other organization to help those impacted directly from addiction and/or mental illness. This position will utilize evidence-based information to create beneficial trainings to help those who are providing peer support and the individuals who also supervise those individuals. The Ohio Association of County Behavioral Health Authorities (OACBHA) works closely with the certifying agency, the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, as well as partners and stakeholders across the state to give those who want to enter this field the best opportunity to succeed. Currently, we network with peer recovery organizations; local Alcohol, Drug Addiction, and Mental Boards; treatment providers; and Managed Care Organizations to recruit and sustain peer recovery supporters through training and technical support and we want to strengthen those collaborations to saturate communities who are in need of this valuable workforce.

Member Duties : This position will create training modules to support and educate peer recovery supporters in Ohio. The trainings will use best practices and experiences from other states, as well as build upon training already created by the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services. The member will work closely with representatives from state agencies and associations, as well as individuals who serve as leaders in the peer recovery field. The VISTA member will work to create a training module for supervisors of peer supporters, gaining knowledge from other state’s training requirements. The member will also be able to create a report that will be a guide for stakeholders on peer support in local communities, which could include best practices for peer success and national stories of successful programming. This opportunity will not only give the member a look at Ohio’s peer support landscape but also knowledge and experience to an emerging field in the country.
