Pine County Health & Human Services - Initiative Foundation

**Position filled on a rolling basis; apply today!** The mission of Pine County Health and Human Services is to promote and protect the health, well-being, and self-sufficiency of all. Located in the county seat of Pine City, approximately one hour north of the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. The county is geographically large, covering over 1,400 square miles. Pine County is hosting an AmeriCorps VISTA project to gain a better understanding of how we can better serve the needs of the community. The amount of child protection reports doubled between 2014 and 2016 (from about 850 to over 1,600). Those numbers are telling us a story, and we need to find out what that story is all about. The rate of poverty is higher than the state average and that may be correlated to the number and frequency of child protection reports that are filed with the agency. The VISTA member will have an opportunity to receive training in the health and human services field, including training on computer systems that are frequently used in local units of government. This knowledge increases the opportunity for employment in the health and human services field, opening the door to future opportunities for the member. The member will also have an opportunity to work with key partners and stakeholders in the Pine County area to increase an understanding of ACEs (adverse childhood experiences) and how that can impact a community, and how our community can provide trauma-informed care, and build resilience within families, children and the community.

Member Duties : VISTA will research and compile summary information related to child protection reports and compare the information to poverty-related data so correlations between poverty and the increase in child protection reports can be identified and better understood. The VISTA will conduct community surveys in which a disproportionate amount of child protection reports are filed to gather information from community members that can identify gaps in services and gaps in core resources. VISTA member will work with the Community Health Administrator in developing a strategic plan for the public health team. This strategic plan will assist in understanding and meeting the community’s health needs specifically including identifying and assessing social determinants of health such as poverty and socioeconomic class. The goal of this work is to gather critical data to inform future decisions about the enhancement of services and allocation of resources to ensure the community's needs are being met.
