LBFE - Neighborhood Initiative Coordinator VISTA (MAVA)

Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly (LBFE) is a volunteer-based nonprofit organization committed to reducing isolation and loneliness in the elder community while promoting their independence and well-being. We provide home visits, social engagement, intergenerational activities and holiday meals, in addition to advocacy, referrals, and support. LBFE is igniting a community-wide movement to address the growing public health concern of social isolation among older adults. The VISTA member will assist with designing a grassroots, neighborhood focused, pilot project to end loneliness and isolation for elders in the Longfellow neighborhood of Minneapolis. The VISTA will identify and create strategic relationships that will help form the framework to eliminating this isolation by engaging and equipping volunteers to lead the project. Volunteers of all ages will be matched as Visiting Volunteer Advocates with neighborhood elders, both self- identified and agency-referred, to help them develop a greater sense of social connection, dignity and well-being. LBFE is a small organization. The VISTA member will have the opportunity to work closely with the Executive Director, Communications and Development staff as well as the Director of Elder Advocacy. The VISTA member will have the opportunity for real hands on learning and will gain experience in program development, program evaluation, and volunteer management. In addition, studying the effects of social isolation on the health and well-being of elders is relatively new. The VISITA member will play a key role in this groundbreaking work. All of these skills are extremely valuable in many careers, especially those within the nonprofit sector.
