Lorain County Opioid Action Team Community Engagement VISTA

The Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services (ADAS) Board coordinates our county’s substance abuse prevention, treatment initiatives by working with others including schools, city/county leaders, children services, faith leaders, recovery communities, service providers and others. Our services include contracting with Ohio certified treatment and prevention providers and recovery housing entities to ensure that Lorain County’s residents in need of substance abuse services are available. To address the opioid issues in Lorain County, ADAS coordinates the Lorain County Opioid Action team. This team is working towards two goals: Reduce Overdose deaths and increase access to treatment and recovery supports. Our work uses a prevention framework through an action plan through two workgroups (data and community engagement) and an Advisory Committee.

Member Duties : Community engagement, education and information are three critical pieces to ensure individuals, families and community leaders have the resources they need. Community engagement will include recruit team leaders from faith and recovery communities and others to ensure we can map out culturally appropriate outreach strategies. The education and information components will include updating the county’s resource library, drafting educational one pagers, and using traditional and social media strategies to disseminate along with completing a crosswalk of curriculum and materials related to: overdose prevention (i.e naloxone, good Samaritan law), medication safe storage and disposal, recovery (supports, peers), how to access treatment services and how to support families with addiction in their families, addiction topics and prevention. The Engagement Coordinator will work with our team including our outreach coordinator, project manager and others who serve on our opioid action team.
