Montgomery County Community Overdose Action Team Support

This placement will put you in the heart of the opiate epidemic – Montgomery County Ohio. You will experience and learn unique skills related to community planning at a macro level with county governmental entities who are using a collective impact model and incident command structure to address addiction. You will work with community leaders in a multi-disciplinary team including public administration, social work, addiction, criminal justice, business leaders, and many others. While Montgomery County is at ground zero of the opiate epidemic in terms of unintentional overdose deaths, the county is also at ground zero in terms of innovative, collective community approaches to harm reduction, prevention, education/information, and treatment & recovery supports. Montgomery County has the highest unintentional drug overdose death rate in the State of Ohio. In early 2016, the County Commissioners convened a community-wide forum to request community stakeholders to convene and work together to address the epidemic. Public Health – Dayton & Montgomery County and Montgomery County Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services have taken the lead to coordinate these community-wide efforts. Under this leadership, community partners have come together to form the Community Overdoes Action Team (COAT). The COAT operates under a Collective Impact Model and the National Incident Management System framework. The National Incident Management System framework provides a consistent template for partners to work together to respond to local, state and federal emergencies. The work of the Community Overdose Action Team seeks to stabilize the number of people dying from drug overdoses and reduce the number of fatal overdoses. All aspects of reducing deaths due to drug overdoses are included in the effort. Specific teams are working on prevention, treatment, law enforcement, the court system, opioid prescriptions, education and outreach.
