Iowa International Center ELL Program

The Accessible ELL Program is part of the Iowa International Center’s Multilingual Services designed to bring English language instruction to adult immigrants and refugees. Our ELL program serves locations that are convenient and familiar to immigrant communities, the majority of whom are from Somalia, Congo, Sudan, Myanmar, Eritrea, Iran, Bhutan, and Iraq. Immigrants and refugees that have settled in Iowa have difficulties transitioning to their new lives due to language barriers that hinder social and economic integration, and our ELL program breaks down some of those barriers through valuable life skills and language readiness. The ELL Program Coordinator works closely with instructors and community volunteers, agency staff, and ELL students, and s/he will strengthen partnerships between the organization with the local community through volunteer capacity-building, community engagement, and resource development. These resources will be used to supplement the existing program by providing additional materials, training, and outreach.
