United Way of Geauga County Community Impact VISTA

United Way of Geauga County (UWGC) is recognized and respected among business representatives and community members as a leader in improving the quality of life in our community. We collaborate with others to address community needs and provide support for dozens of local partners. 1 in 13 people in Geauga live below the Federal Poverty Level (FPL), and research shows 25% of Geauga County residents struggle to meet basic needs such as housing, utilities and food. That's why United Way is developing programs and funding partners that move low-income households away from the brink of crisis toward financial stability. We believe that financial stability often begins with improving awareness of, and providing access to financial resources, including local, state and federal benefits designed to encourage self-sufficiency. AmeriCorps VISTA, in collaboration with our team and community partners that serve economically disadvantaged and at-risk individuals and families, will help develop and expand the Geauga Income Collaborative’s (GIC) Bridges2Work program, an effort to connect under resourced individuals to educational opportunities as well as connect them to local employers who need trained employees. Program development for a reentry program serving the county jail will be part of the VISTA’s service. VISTA will also help address poverty in our community by engaging volunteers to collaborate on solutions that increase the financial stability of residents and helping identify career pathways for underemployed and unemployed individuals who need assistance towards greater financial stability.
