2018 Civil Rights Community Outreach and Policy VISTA
 
 
 
Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights has operated as Chicago’s preeminent nonprofit civil rights legal organization since 1969. We are civil rights lawyers and advocates working to secure racial equity and economic opportunity for all. The Housing Opportunity Project (HOP) of Chicago Lawyers’ Committee focuses on systemic litigation and advocacy to combat housing discrimination and barriers to opportunity.The VISTA will work with Chicago Lawyers’ Committee’s Housing Opportunity Project to advance the organization’s mission to promote racial equity and economic opportunity for all and the Project’s mission to combat housing discrimination and barriers to opportunity. Specifically, the VISTA will help build stronger and more effective partnerships with community-based organizations through the implementation of an outreach plan that is tied to the Project’s strategic goals and develop materials from policy research and analysis that identify issues impacting communities that the Project serves. Ultimately, the capacity building, outreach and education, and policy research activities that the VISTA will work on through the project will have a direct impact on Chicago Lawyers’ Committee’s effectiveness as an organization.An ideal candidate has strong analytical and communication skills and a demonstrated commitment to public service. Experience in racial justice work (or work on behalf of low-income communities and/or communities of color) or policy advocacy is a plus. Spanish language proficiency is a plus but is not required.This position is a part of the Housing Action VISTA Network. Member Duties : By the end of the first month of the service year, the VISTA will develop an outreach plan relating to the Project’s strategic goals and take steps to implement the plan by the end of the second month. At that time, the VISTA identify at least three policy issues relating to housing and barriers to opportunity to conduct factual research and develop written materials to inform staff members and communities served. By the end of the sixth month, the VISTA will be implementing the outreach plan and producing written work products on policy research. By the end of the tenth month, the VISTA will continue to implement the plan with increased responsibility for activities and publicize ideas from the policy research. By the end of the service year, the VISTA will have served as lead representative for the Project at several outreach and education events with community-based organizations and develop a plan to for permanent staff to continue capacity building with respect to outreach.
