2018-2019 Keith Creek Greenway VISTA

ZION Development Corporation is a faith-based organization started by Zion Lutheran Church that has focused on community development work in the Midtown area of Rockford. ZION is working with community partners to develop a greenway along Keith Creek in southeast Rockford. The Keith Creek Greenway will provide alternative transportation options to job centers in downtown Rockford and along the State Street Corridor. It will also create recreation opportunities by linking schools and parks along 4.5 miles of Keith Creek. The first phases of the Greenway will link Midtown, an impoverished community, to Downtown and provide access to job opportunities for a community where many people do not have cars. The VISTA project will be focused on creating a vision and plan for launching the first phase of the Greenway. ZION is looking for a positive, energetic, and outgoing person who is willing to work with very diverse populations and community leaders around the common cause of creating the Keith Creek Greenway. This project marries the passions of helping low-income communities and creating a unique and environmentally conscious greenway that connects multiple neighborhoods, schools and parks. This position will require creative approaches and critical thinking to navigate a wide range of issues. The community partners include neighborhood associations, business districts, governmental agencies, nonprofits, advocacy organizations, planning groups, and businesses. Member Duties : Develop the vision and planning approach for the overall Keith Creek Greenway, with particular emphasis on launching the first phase that connects the 10th Avenue Park to ZION’s Strong Neighborhood House. Work with neighborhood associations and community partners to build support for the project. Research routes for the Greenway as well as properties that may need to be acquired for the project at various points along the route. Work with governmental and community partners to design the overall project as well as the specific designs around flood mitigation, recreation, environmentally friendly design, etc. Research and pursue funding opportunities for the project.
