MTCC - Bozeman School Outreach and Literacy

The mission of the English Learner (EL) and Native American Indian (NAI) programs of the Bozeman Public School District is to promote and support academic language learning and college and career readiness in a culturally inclusive way. The programs work to ensure that these groups have meaningful access to rigorous instruction, materials, and academic choices. 36% and 34% of English Learner (EL) and Native American Indian (NAI) students drop out of Montana schools. (Juneau, 2014). In the past year alone, the Bozeman School District EL program enrollment data documented a 50% increase in enrolled EL students, rising from 100 to 150 English learners. Nearly 40% of these students are receiving free or reduced lunches and qualify for Title 1 programing. Bozeman rental prices are the highest in the state of Montana, so many of EL/NAI families live with 2-3 families per household to survive. The VISTA will help build literacy programs for these students to succeed in school and increase access to higher education, career employment and higher paying jobs.
