Chicago Coalition for the Homeless (CCH) is the only non-profit in Illinois dedicated to advocating for public policies that curb and can ultimately end homelessness. Our organization leads strategic campaigns, community outreach, and public policy initiatives that target the lack of affordable housing in metropolitan Chicago and across Illinois. Our community organizers, policy specialists, and public interest attorneys advocate with people hurt by homelessness, including mothers with children, students, unaccompanied youth, ex-offenders, prostitution survivors, and low-wage workers. The VISTA will identify, train and support community leadership through the following: The goal of the program is to identify and develop leaders. Meet individually with students experiencing homelessness to hear how they became homeless and what issues CCH should focus on to prevent homelessness in the future and improve homeless student’s access to education in the future. Organize high school students to educate fellow members of the community about the needs and resources for homeless students. Utilize the Speakers Bureau as a recruitment tool to engage volunteers to become a part of the work in the high schools. (The Speakers Bureau of CCH is led by 10-15 formerly homeless individuals. The speakers talk about their own experiences with homelessness and the volunteer work that they do with CCH.) Develop a way to explain volunteer opportunities to students at Allied Organization in a way that accessible.The Ideal candidate for this VISTA position: You must have a positive and no judgmental attitude when dealing with homeless individuals. Social justice and social change must be a driving force when working people in homeless populations.

Member Duties : Initiate leadership program with students experiencing homelessness an additional high school and formulate programming for the leadership program. Utilize the Speakers Bureau to recruit volunteers to assist in the work at high schools and CCH. Recruit and develop 7 youth leaders who are experiencing homelessness from monthly leadership programming at a high school. Develop a way to explain volunteer opportunities to students at Allied Organizations (AOs) and expand our capacity by integrating volunteers, youth leaders, and AOs into volunteer opportunities. Conduct one on ones with Students in Transitional Living Situations Liaison, Principal, and other Administrators. Meet with Leadership Team and gather input on monthly programming for the year. Recruit 30 people from AOs to become active volunteers. Conduct one on ones with 30 college students. Conduct one on ones with 15 active Speakers Bureau Members. Develop a system to introduce volunteers to other Organizers.
