MTCC - International Rescue Committee Missoula
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps to restore health, safety, education, economic well-being, and power to people devastated by conflict and disaster. Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the IRC works in over 40 countries and 28 U.S. cities to help refugees and victims of oppression to survive, reclaim control of their future, and strengthen their communities. The Missoula, Montana office, established in August 2016, has resettled 140 individuals from countries including Eritrea, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Syria, and Iraq. Refugees that are resettled to Missoula are economically disadvantaged. All refugees arrive to Missoula without savings, credit and employment. They also arrive with debt, as all refugees are required to take out a loan for their travel to the United States. All refugee families are eligible for public benefits upon arrival, and all refugee children are eligible for the free and reduced school lunch program. IRC data reveals that the median household income of immigrant families falls 12% below native-born families. Improving English language and educational outcomes for refugee students increases the entire refugee family's opportunity for success. English language skills are the key to a better education and better employment opportunities, thus improving the economic conditions of refugees. The VISTA will help develop a systematic process for enrolling all resettled refugee youth in English language programming and develop a public school orientation to support academic and acculturation success; and create a cultural competency training for school and community partners working with refugee youth to increase their capacity to understand and appropriately support refugee youth.
