Philadelphia Interfaith Hospitality Network

Philadelphia has the highest poverty (25.8%) and “deep poverty” (12.3%) rates among the nation’s 10 largest cities. Poverty statistics for households with children are even higher. In 2015, 38.3% of Philadelphia children lived in poverty. Along with thousands of other children just above the poverty line, the children and their parents are at higher-than-average risk for extreme stress, housing insecurity, lead exposure, and neglect. While families with children compromise 37% of the homeless population, there are not enough resources to assist those who need it the most. The Philadelphia Office of Homeless Services has reported an average of 100 families a day unable to find much needed shelter. Those who get turned away turn to PIHN (Philadelphia Interfaith Hospitality Network). The VISTA member would be charged with expanding the capacity of PIHN’s volunteer programs beyond the shelter hosting assignments (meal preparation and hosting) to a skill-based volunteer program to staff the anti-poverty aspects of PIHN’s work. This would be accomplished by mobilizing corporations and individuals interested in supporting PIHN’s work through in-kind donations and service hours, as well as assisting PIHN in its second year of outcome measurement focusing on longer term outcomes beyond moving people into stable, manageable housing situations.
