KidsSmiles

Founded in 2001, KidsSmiles provides critical access to dental care for over 18,000 low-income children each year at two dental centers located in Southwest Philadelphia and West Philadelphia. Philadelphia has the highest child poverty rate among the nation’s 25 most populous counties. The majority of Philadelphia children (56%) are enrolled in Medical Assistance while 3% of children have no insurance coverage at all. The majority of KidsSmiles patients (87%) are insured by Medicaid and CHIP, or they are uninsured. The Outreach and Education program sends educational and clinical staff into local community locations to help bring awareness and importance of oral health. When this program takes place at a school, the students are also being given free dental screenings. When this program began, 59% of all children screened had visible decay in their mouths. After years of returning to these same schools and providing the children with the necessary tools and resources Kids Smiles are seeing results as low as 19% visible decay. Working with the Outreach and Education program to develop new innovative partnerships with community organizations, the VISTA member will help increase the number of children served and connected to oral health education. A key component of the outreach expansion will include partnerships with Early Head Start programs to reach young parents with at-risk infants and toddlers. The VISTA will be working in KidsSmiles main office located in Blue Bell, PA. You may need to travel between sites so a personal vehicle is recommended.
