PHENND - SDP Office of Grant Development

PHENND (The Philadelphia Higher Education Network for Neighborhood Development) is a 25-year-old consortium of over 25 colleges and universities in the Greater Philadelphia region. The consortium actively seeks to revitalize local communities and promote civic responsibility through service learning among the region's higher education institutions. As part of our K-16 Partnerships Network, the PHENND VISTA project represents a sixth year of partnership with the School District of Philadelphia to expand the infrastructure for community partnership development across Philadelphia. The School District of Philadelphia is a large urban school district that includes all public schools in Philadelphia, which includes 220 traditional public schools and approximately 80 charter schools. Established in 1818, it is one of the top ten largest schools districts in the United States, serving close to 200, 000 children. With a focus on equity, innovation and quality, Dr. William R. Hite serves as Superintendent of The School District of Philadelphia, the largest public school system in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The overarching goals of the SDP are: 100% of students will graduate ready for college and career; 100% of 8-year-olds will read on grade level; and the SDP will have 100% of the funding it needs for great schools, and zero deficit.

Member Duties : This first year VISTA in the Office of Grant Development at the School District of Philadelphia will address the need for additional capacity to support school-based fund development efforts. The VISTA will review OGD’s current capacity for responding to requests for funding at the school level and develop a coordinated effort to address schools who request assistance. They will help develop appropriate workshops and guidance materials for school personnel, including PHENND school-based VISTAs and Mayor’s Office Community School Site Coordinators, beyond introductory level sessions currently available, to develop grant requests in order to reduce duplication of efforts and provide a more robust and thoughtful response to schools. Finally, they will assist senior staff in making recommendations for improving existing policies, best practices, and developing any necessary new policies/efforts around fundraising.
