*Goodwill VISTA* Teens to Trails, Brunswick

Teens To Trails (T3) is an outdoor nonprofit that provides resources, training, programming, and financial assistance to support High School Outing Clubs. We are working to engage more teens in the outdoors and expose youth to healthy outdoor activities. Research directly links the absence of nature in the lives of today’s wired generation to some of the most disturbing childhood trends: obesity, attention disorders, and depression. This growing body of research indicates that direct exposure to nature is essential for healthy development and for our physical & emotional health. Particularly hard hit are those young people whose families have few resources or time to consider the importance of unstructured outdoor time. Teens To Trails (or T3) was founded solely to battle this growing disconnect between teens and their natural world. T3’s MISSION: Teens To Trails is dedicated to increasing the opportunities for Maine teens to experience the out-of-doors through a variety of programs that promote & support high school Outing Clubs. T3’s VISION: With active Outing Clubs offered in high schools across Maine, ALL teens will have safe access to healthy outdoor adventures regardless of prior experience or family income level just at the time in their lives when they need positive choices the most. Teens To Trails has developed programs to help high school Outing Clubs: the award of $50,000+ in financial grants, safety & skills training for Outing Club leaders, college-aged mentors for high school Outing Club teens & gatherings to bring Outing Clubs together for mutual support. Of the 9 Outing Clubs we helped start in the last 2 years, over half of their students were on free or reduced lunches. Read more on www.TeensToTrails.org.

Member Duties : T3 is dedicated to increasing the opportunities for Maine teens to experience the outdoors through a variety of programs that promote & support high school Outing Clubs. The AmeriCorps VISTA member will focus needed attention on how Outing Clubs benefit diverse communities, especially immigrant populations (i.e., Lewiston, Auburn, Portland), talking with people, collecting data & developing insights into working with impoverished populations. The AmeriCorps VISTA will also work on developing our mentorship programs with college outdoor clubs and local middle schools. Your service will improve T3’s outreach efforts to these diverse populations by providing insights into their needs and helping us develop tools to encourage their participation in Outing Club activities. The AmeriCorps VISTA member will join the T3 team in putting on a large Festival Event in August & supervising volunteers on Festival Day.
