Drexel University Building Healthy Communities

The City of Philadelphia was selected as one of three cities for a Promise Zone designation by the Obama Administration. Led by the White House, with support from U.S Dept. of Housing and Urban Development, U.S Dept. of Agriculture, U.S Dept. of Justice, and the U.S Dept. of Education, the Promise Zone Initiative involves local leaders to boost economic activity and job growth, improve educational opportunities, reduce crime and leverage private investment to improve the quality of life in federally selected communities. The target area of the Promise Zone locally is roughly two square miles in West Philadelphia; it includes 35,315 residents with an overall poverty rate of 50.78%, nearly double the city’s rate of 26.9%. The VISTA member will work to help improve the health and wellbeing of residents by engaging community leaders, stakeholders, local agencies and businesses, and residents to develop and implement community driven, culturally appropriate and sustainable health initiatives and programs. The goal is to develop implement community-driven, culturally appropriate, and sustainable health initiatives and programs for the residents in the Promise Zone communities that can be piloted, evaluated and sustained long after the VISTA member has completed their service.
