CCMA Career and College Readiness-Underrepresented Students

With increased transition of high school English Language Learners to FCC's degree programming or workforce development programming and increased persistence and completion the main objective of the ELL Transfer and Completion Initiative, the AmeriCorps VISTA will 1) collaborate with Frederick County Public Schools to develop a sustainable, ongoing year-long cycle of outreach; 2) collaborate with the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to develop cultural competence professional development that focuses on understanding ELL communities in Fredrick County; 3) develop messaging tailored to targeted ELL audiences and participation in the development of a strategic community outreach plan aimed to establish and enhance partnerships with community organizations that support ELL students and their families; and 4) identify areas of support for ELL students at FCC and contribute to the development as needed. The primary audience is English Language Learners; a large portion of this group of students identify as being new Americans, immigrants, and refugees. Many of these students and their families could benefit from extensive explanation and information regarding program types that exist in post-secondary education, particularly in a community college setting. With increased targeted outreach and support, it is the goal of this initiative to provide leadership.
