Cornell Cooperative Extension Jefferson - PA/NYCC

This project is located in the Northern NY counties of Jefferson, Lewis, St Lawrence and Oswego - among the poorest counties in NYS and home of the 10th Mountain Division. This project is working with a NYS initiative to start a food hub, improve food access, introduce agricultural careers to military families and veterans and improve the sustainability of small agricultural businesses. This project will survey farmers and institutions that buy local food using ArcGIS and use map-able data to help a team identify and solve for problems within the local food system. This VISTA will also have the opportunity to work with military families and align them with resources to start farming or connect with agricultural careers and training. Outcomes will include improved profitability of farmers, improved food system infrastructure including aggregation, distribution and access, improved access to jobs and lucrative careers, improved agricultural markets and a better educated consumer and community that values the economic benefits of locally sourced food. Farmers will access valuable training that improves their marketability and safety of the food they grow. Pennsylvania/New York Campus Compact VISTAs (PA/NYCC*VISTAs) are part of a VISTA cohort of 40 members placed at higher ed. institutions across PA and NY to build campus-community partnerships. Professional development opportunities, including specialized workshops and retreats, and support to the VISTA cohort will be provided throughout the year of service.

Member Duties : This VISTA will gather data on food system infrastructure and agricultural assets that will result in an ArcGIS map of our food system. The VISTA will assist with analysis and determine solutions and business models for the food hub and implement promising ideas that will enhance success and sustainability. Initial ideas include implementing food security concepts and measuring the impact on targeted audiences. In addition, this VISTA will support the Small Farms Program - Farm Ops assisting Soldiers transitioning from military careers into civilian employment by linking transferable skills learned during military service to viable agricultural careers. The VISTA will work with CCE staff, Food Hub staff, community agencies, farmers, military personnel and Cornell University faculty to re-envision and re-create a new, viable and sustainable food system that addresses inequity and improve health in the four county region of Jefferson, Lewis, Oswego and St Lawrence.
