'20-'21 Greenville County Behavioral Health VISTA

Are you ready to help alleviate poverty and make a huge and lasting impact on the lives of residents of Upstate South Carolina? The Greenville County Behavioral Health VISTA program will be in its fourth year in the 2020-2021 service year. We need talented, smart, and passionate people like YOU to take the area's behavioral health services to the next level, thereby increasing access to care across the county. In 2019, South Carolina ranked a dismal 49th in how successfully residents can access formal mental health care services. A recent assessment of low-income adults indicated that a lack of access to behavioral health services is one of the greatest concerns in Greenville County. The death rate due to suicide is higher in the county than in the state and the nation. And, unfortunately, the county's number of opioid-related deaths far exceed the national average with the problem continuing to grow; from 2016 to 2017, the number of deaths due to such overdoses increased by 60%. During the 2020-2021 year of the GCBH VISTA Program, VISTAs will each work at one of a minimum of twelve sites to expand anti-poverty programming and increase its capacity to serve more individuals needing access to behavioral health services. Each VISTA focuses on either mental health or a concentration on opioid misuse. Greenville, South Carolina continues to receive national and international recognition for its southern charm, opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts, arts scene, sports culture, and cuisine. In 2019, Expedia named it as one of its 19 Must-See Cites. Greenville has been lauded by The New York Times as one of the 52 cities in the world to visit, by USA Today as one of the ten best emerging destinations, and as one of America’s ten best downtowns for its combination of revitalized commercial and park space. Greenville is located at the base of the Blue Ridge mountains.
