Mercy College - CCNYPA

The Mav Market campus food pantry AmeriCorps VISTA at Mercy College plays an integral role in a project aimed at increasing college success for students from low-income families in the New York metropolitan area by reducing the impact of food insecurity. We opened our first campus food pantry in October 2017 and now have three pantries across three of our campuses with over 600 registered pantry members. In the third year of the project, the VISTA will work on maintaining the sustainability of the Mav Market pantries through overseeing the students doing the regular pantry operation and continuing to build a system of resources focused on food insecurity and more. The VISTA will continue to utilize the tracking systems of visitors and the amounts of food they are allocated and taking. They will continue to grow our student volunteer base, and collaborations with our Feeding Westchester and Food Bank NYC partnerships. As part of the implementation, the VISTA will be responsible for building additional relationships with college alumni and other organizations in order secure not only donations but resources, discounts, and support of any caliber. Through working with assessment data collected in year 2, the VISTA will be able to have more specific demographic and needs information specific to our campus. With this they will be able to assist in data driven research to support the mission of offering a broader range of social services for our community as outlined in our 2020-2025 strategic plan. A federally designated Hispanic Serving Institution and a Minority Serving Institution, Mercy serves a diverse student body: 68% of its undergraduate students are non-white, over 60% are Pell eligible, over 40% self-identify as the first in their family to attend college, and 32% are adults.
