Literacy Council Summer Associate

Literacy is Power…and we want to empower our community! The Literacy Council of Grand Island has been providing free literacy and ESL education to students since 1981. We teach reading, writing, and math literacy skills free of charge and regardless of age, income, background, race, or religion. We believe promoting literacy builds stronger communities, encourages prosperity, and increases opportunities. Our unofficial mission is to build bridges to help unite our diverse community. Grand Island’s diversity has grown exponentially since the Literacy Council opened its doors. From the 2010 census to the 2015 census, the Black/African American population has increases 30.6% and the Hispanic population has increased 13.7%. It is estimated that over 10,000 people speak Spanish, 496 people speak an Asian/Pacific Islander language, 256 people speak an Ind0European language, and 689 people speak a different language all together. We know our community is changing and we have to change with it. Currently, the Literacy Council provides English language help, financial literacy, cultural literacy, health literacy, GED preparation, Civics and Citizenship education, and digital literacy. The Literacy Council is not political, but is pro-education and pro-community. Our four pillars of programming are: One-on-one tutoring, language and learning lab, group classes, and the community connection center. The increase in amount of students reaffirms our need in the community. In 2010, there were 53 active students. In 2017, there were 514 active students. Currently, there are 550 students from over 30 countries.
