Manhattan College, The Road to College - PA/NYCC

Manhattan College and partners propose a critical service to low-income NYC students and their families to: navigate the NYC high school admission process; be prepared for the “transition” to high school; and gain early college and career readiness. Partners will engage in the training model that leads to their empowerment to help their students obtain a good and appropriate high school placement where they can prepare successfully for and graduate from high school ready for postsecondary education. Such empowerment will enhance the educational expectations, ambition and persistence of their students to emerge from poverty and lead their community or school to build capacity to do it themselves. Pennsylvania/New York Campus Compact VISTAs (PA/NYCC*VISTAs) are part of a VISTA cohort of 40 members placed at higher ed. institutions across PA and NY to build campus-community partnerships. Professional development opportunities, including specialized workshops and retreats, and support to the VISTA cohort will be provided throughout the year of service. Manhattan College will provide the following additional benefits: 1. Tuition reduction, 2. Reduced cost of a meal plan, 3. Competitive pricing on housing

Member Duties : Initially, our VISTA will focus on curriculum and model development, training, and outcomes research with Center for Optimal College Assistant Director and Dr. Fitzpatrick. The VISTA worker will then strategically focus on capturing the desire and commitment of the partners to sustain this work and build their capacity to do so. The VISTA worker will be responsible for training and overseeing the trainers including: Manhattan College graduate and undergraduate students who already serve in college readiness work for the Center for Optimal College Readiness (COCR) and community volunteers; with partners the VISTA will develop a schedule of workshops and mentoring for school/agency staff including college readiness curriculum and transition advising.
