*Goodwill VISTA* Freeport Community Services

Freeport Community Services (FCS) traces its beginnings back to the early 1970's, when a group of local women decided to help their friends & neighbors in need. The founders were not wealthy people- they were simply compassionate community members who wanted to make a difference. The founders created a space and collected furniture/clothes for friends & neighbors in need. A few of these women, now seniors, volunteer today in our food pantry & thrift store. Our mission is to enrich lives, connect neighbors, & help those in need. Since 1974, we have provided essential services such as emergency food, fuel, & utility assistance, as well as other essential services for children & adults. Maine is one of the "oldest" states in the nation. Many of Maine's seniors are economically disadvantaged. Our rapidly aging population presents challenges as well as opportunities to support our most vulnerable elders. With the rising costs of essentials, like housing, food & heat, too many Maine families do not have the means to stretch their income to cover their basis needs. This is especially true for 15% of seniors who are food insecure. In the next year, FCS wants to build a sustainable age friendly initiative that allows seniors to safely age in place-in their homes. We are seeking an outgoing and energetic AmeriCorps VISTA member to lead that effort and are we excited at the opportunities this initiative presents to improve the quality of life for older adults in our communiry! www.fcsmaine.org

Member Duties : While Freeport, Maine is a popular tourist destination, it often comes as a surprise that poverty is a big issue in our community, especially where 15% of our population are seniors. FCS is seeking an AmeriCorps VISTA member to help support our efforts to develop age-friendly initiatives in the area. Emphasis will be on senior hunger, transportation, home modifications, access to health services, & decreased isolation. Last year, we completed a community needs assessment & of the 6 themes that emerged, “keeping seniors home” was the #1 priority. We are seeking an AmeriCorps VISTA member to help us build capacity by taking this goal from paper to reality to help improve the quality of life for older adults. The member will take a leadership role in creating age-friendly initiatives & an action plan with an emphasis on those living in poverty and/or fixed incomes. If you are an energetic, people person who is organized, self-directed and a great communicator we invite you to apply!
