Arthur Morgan Institute Summer Associate

Summer Associate will assist an AmeriCorps VISTA as part of ongoing organizational efforts to build a strong regional food system that will benefit local communities by increasing access to fresh, healthy food, expanding employment opportunities, addressing issues of food insecurity, and supporting local efforts to strengthen community self-reliance and resilience. The food and agricultural sectors are the largest industries in Ohio, accounting for 11 percent of the state’s employment. As part of the nation’s “breadbasket,” the region is well equipped to grow food for its people—yet in 2016 Ohio ranked fifth in the nation for food insecurity. That ranking reflects an increase in the number of Ohio households experiencing food insecurity, from 15.5 percent in 2012 to 16.1 percent in 2016, which exceeds the 2016 national rate of 12.3 percent. Southwest Ohio has a high concentration of food insecure zones; in Montgomery County, the rate was 18 percent, in Greene County, 13.9 percent, and in 2015, Springfield, the largest urban center in Clark County, was named the most food insecure city in Ohio. Furthermore, the lack of access to healthy foods has been linked to decreased health outcomes, and both Montgomery and Clark counties rank low on these measures. Making fresh, local food more accessible to local consumers, and providing them with the knowledge, tools, and support to grow their own food, can help address area food insecurity and also improve community economics. Our project builds on a foodshed assessment conducted by Community Solutions, which found that small farmers in the region face challenges connecting directly with local consumers as well as in restoring soil and water health to urban soil that has been contaminated and depleted. It also builds on the foundation laid by previous food access initiatives in Springfield, including a partnership between Community Solutions and the Springfield City School District on a Farm to School project.
