Community College Food Security Initiative - PA/NYCC

The Food Security Project @ Community Colleges will collect, catalogue, and disseminate the community college (CC) response to food insecurity among CC student populations and in their surrounding communities in New York and Pennsylvania. In the first phase of the project, the information gathered will be stored in an online, searchable database. The second phase will consist of a review of the information, follow-up interviews to ascertain the effectiveness and efficiency of the various initiatives and programs, and development of a dissemination plan for promoting more robust responses to food insecurity at the community college level. We intend to develop regional working groups among these institutions to promote food security initiatives with the communities external to CC, as well. The FSP@CC VISTA will serve as the project coordinator. In the first year, s/he will develop a survey of food security projects at community colleges; develop a database of institutional profiles and contacts; research programmatic and funding resources; develop an outreach plan; and develop a plan for regional convenings of CCs involved in food security projects. The VISTA member will also work with faculty involved in food security research as appropriate. The VISTA member will be housed in New York, but work across New York and Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania/New York Campus Compact VISTAs (PA/NYCC*VISTAs) are part of a VISTA cohort of 40 members placed at higher ed. institutions across PA and NY to build campus-community partnerships. Professional development opportunities, including specialized workshops and retreats, and support to the VISTA cohort will be provided throughout the year of service.
