SUNY Geneseo RKids - PA/NYCC

RKids Geneseo seeks to foster confidence, competence, and a sense of community connection among low-income families in the village of Geneseo through our after-school enrichment program, educational workshops, and events for parents and whole families. RKids currently has seven youth in grades 3-5 attending regular meetings that run from 3:00 - 4:30 pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, with a vision to expand to twelve to fifteen students by the close of this year. We seek to grow programming to serve more students, and students from from different grade levels. The VISTA will create dynamic and challenging programming that will include after-school activities, the maintenance of a local community garden, coordination of educational outings and field trips, connections to Geneseo students and faculty members, and a portfolio of educational and financial resources for families that will support mobility out of poverty. To support these activities the VISTA will build upon a framework established during year one of the project to engage students in traditional and experiential learning activities in an inclusive environment that prioritizes the integration of personal empowerment and academic achievement. Connections will be made to community based organizations and agencies in the region that will broaden understanding of social systems and available resources; creating networks of support for the individuals and their families. Pennsylvania/New York Campus Compact VISTAs (PA/NYCC*VISTAs) are part of a VISTA cohort of 40 members placed at higher ed. institutions across PA and NY to build campus-community partnerships. Professional development opportunities, including specialized workshops and retreats, and support to the VISTA cohort will be provided throughout the year of service.
