HWS, Geneva Food Access - PA/NYCC

Geneva’s youth poverty rate is over 35 percent, three times that of its county, and double that of New York State. The individual and family poverty rates are 25 percent and 17 percent respectively, with higher poverty rates for non-white residents. Most of these residents live more than a mile from a grocery store. With a growing poverty rate in Geneva, community organizations providing direct and indirect food access and education programing have seen an increase in participation. Yet the multiple agencies and volunteers working to address this complex issue in Geneva often work in silos. The VISTA will strengthen the community by supporting the City’s efforts on prosperity for all residents. By understanding current food security efforts, the VISTA will help stakeholders avoid duplication while also redirecting energies to new or under-utilized programs. In addition, the VISTA will impact the long-term sustainability of two new community assets: the City’s Innovation Kitchen (KitGen) and the HWS Fribolin Farm. The KitGen is a shared kitchen rented by food entrepreneurs to produce products or by caterers to prepare foods. The HWS Fribolin Farm is a sustainable campus-based farm that aims to provide wholesome food, products, and developmental experiences to our community and neighbors; faculty, staff, students, and the local and regional community. The VISTA will play a vital role in connecting campus and community collaborative potential, and to fully capitalize on this joint endeavor, the VISTA will work at Geneva City Hall and access various resources on HWS campus. Pennsylvania/New York Campus Compact VISTAs (PA/NYCC*VISTAs) are part of a VISTA cohort of 40 members placed at higher ed. institutions across PA and NY to build campus-community partnerships. Professional development opportunities, including specialized workshops and retreats, and support to the VISTA cohort will be provided throughout the year of service.

Member Duties : The VISTA will assess food gaps and resources in Geneva by surveying both residents and agencies. The survey results will allow for informed conversations to constructively analyze challenges and inclusively explore opportunities that address access to nutrition in the Geneva community. Building on the recent growth of our “uniquely urban” community as a food and beverage destination, the VISTA will develop the strategy to heighten awareness and promote usage of the Innovation Kitchen, a new and exciting destination located at 122 North Genesee Street. Lastly, The VISTA will support efforts currently underway at the HWS Fribolin Farm and work with staff from the Finger Lakes Institute to further engage Geneva residents (with a focus on youth) in Farm and nutrition related programming.
