North Dakota STEM Exchange

The North Dakota STEM Exchange project proposed by the North Dakota STEM Network seeks to cross sectors and levels in North Dakota to coordinate resources and events that can help schools, educators, students, families, communities, businesses and industry to develop the STEM-enabled workforce needed to ensure prosperity in the future of North Dakota. Jobs that have varying degrees of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) are in increasing demand, and in order to address unfilled demand in the workforce, every student must have access to awareness of STEM careers and quality, hands-on STEM education experiences. These efforts to develop broader and easier access to an organized clearinghouse of STEM resources and opportunities, will enable underserved populations such as remote rural, low-income, females, and Native Americans be included among the 86,907 families with 159,138 children in North Dakota that will be made aware that STEM-expertise can help them rise from disadvantaged backgrounds to contribute to their own prosperity, as well as that of the entire state. The work of the three VISTA members will provide an organized and easy to access clearinghouse of opportunities for all students in North Dakota, particularly those who reside in communities that are typically remote from resources and news about STEM education opportunities. The VISTAs will do this through their work on the development and maintenance of infrastructure and the content of the ND STEM Exchange. Their development and promotion of the Exchange will provide a tangible and lasting resource, enabling the North Dakota STEM Network to pursue sustainable funding with value to offer to the philanthropic and private stakeholders in North Dakota STEM education. Over the three years of their work with the ND STEM Network, the VISTAs will also support exploration and application for such funding opportunities, which will enable expanded capacity to endure beyond their service.
