College Health Corps, Normandale Community College
Normandale Community College is the largest community college in the Minnesota State system, serving almost 15,000 students a year. Our mission is to advance individuals' intellectual, career, and personal development by providing outstanding teaching and support. As the number of low-income and other underrepresented students at Normandale has grown, we have seen increased demand for non-academic supports that can help students persist and reach their academic goals. Overall, the goal of the project is to increase low-income students’ access to health and wellness, food, housing, and other non-academic needs by increasing and strengthening partnerships with community organizations and establishing a Student Resource Center where partners can provide services and referrals. As part of the project the VISTA will develop training materials for work-study funded student workers and create training and resource materials for faculty and staff. This project will have significant impacts not only on student health outcomes, but also on their academic success. ---This project is part of the College Health Corps (CHC) VISTA Program, operated by Minnesota Campus Compact. The CHC increases low-income individuals’ access to health care, health education, food, and basic needs through capacity building projects, including partnerships between higher education and community based organizations. Professional development focuses on health equity, the social determinants of health, and effective partnership development. --- ***Interviews will occur on a rolling basis. Preference given to candidates who apply early.***

Member Duties : First, the AmeriCorps member will increase Normandale’s capacity to provide non-academic supports by establishing/strengthening relationships with six community organizations. To do this, they will identify the main areas of student needs and determine possible partner organizations. Second, they will establish a Student Resource Center, which will help 700 low-income students access non-academic support services and referrals provided by community partners. As part of this, they will secure physical space for a center and develop a communication plan for the resources we will provide. Third, they will create a referral guide and train-the-trainer materials to ensure faculty and staff are educated on low-income students' non-academic support needs and how to refer students to available services. This could include surveying Normandale students to determine the top needs of low-income students and developing training materials for faculty and staff.
