Empowering Huntington County
Empowering Huntington County is comprised of three organizations: Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington County, Purdue Extension Huntington County and Parkview YMCA. These groups have united to increase access to healthy foods, educate residents about the importance of physical activity and improve safety plans in youth serving organizations. The Parkview Boys & Girls Club has increased the number of youth served over the last three years, serving more than 330 kids each day. Providing a safe place for kids and teens is a priority for the Club. The Club is seeking an individual to help evaluate current safety plans and procedures and create new ones to better serve the youth members. Purdue Extension is an organization that focuses on Agriculture and Natural Resources, Health and Human Sciences, Economic and Community Development and 4-H Youth Development. One of its newest endeavors is the Community Garden, which offers fresh fruits and vegetables to those in need. The Extension is seeking an individual to recruit and manage volunteers as well develop a corporate partnership program for the Community Garden. The Parkview YMCA includes a diverse group of men, women and children who share a commitment to healthy living. The YMCA provides a variety of programs, classes and individual activities for community members to engage in an active and healthy lifestyle. Affordable options exist so that all Huntington County residents may access these offerings. The YMCA is seeking an individual to create an awareness campaign, targeting economically challenged residents, to increase access physical activities that create healthy lifestyles.

Member Duties : VISTA members will become versed in the history, mission and operations of the organization; learn the relevant demographics of the County and population served; evaluate current program, research similar programs and make program enhancements accordingly; recruit and oversee program volunteers; seek corporate partnerships; create safety plans and procedures; and create awareness campaigns for healthy lifestyles.
