ShareCorps -Columbus YWCA- Shelter/Job & Housing Coordinator
The Columbus YWCA is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. One major program is the YWCA Family Center, an emergency crisis shelter for homeless families. The Family Center's vision is to provide effective comprehensive crisis services in a welcoming and respectful environment. These services address the current crisis and root cause of homelessness. Families leave with skills and resources to support housing stability. Homeless famiiles stay at the Family Center an average of 30-40 days. During this time the services offered provide experience, knowledge and opportunity to practice behaviors that lead to healthy outcomes for adults and children. A daily structure encourages families to effectively meet their basic needs through nutritious meals, access to personal hygiene and laundry resources, and access to on-site licensed childcare (5 Star Rating). Each family receives case management services to develop an individualized plan with goals of acquiring income and housing in a reasonable timeframe. Families are referred to partner agencies for additional resources such as financial assistance, mental health services, legal counsel, and education on eviction prevention and financial literacy.
