Communities In Schools -Communications & Marketing

Communities In Schools is the nation's largest dropout prevention organization. Communities In Schools' mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. School academic data shows that students in poverty are less likely to achieve academic success so CIS intentionally places site coordinators into schools with high poverty rates to address issues these students are dealing with including food insecurity, housing instability, unmet physical and mental health issues along with many others impacting their academic success. CIS works with school leadership and staff to better understand and identify student needs and help change systems of care for students in poverty, providing the resources needed to allow them to focus on school achievement, graduation from high school and a chance to earn post-secondary credentials. The activities performed by VISTA members will be designed to strengthen the organizational capacity needed to sustain and grow local CIS efforts to remove barriers to academic success for students in poverty. VISTA time and energy will expand the agency's reach and increase the number of students served. Throughout their assignments, VISTA members will work to increase resources, garner partnerships and grow awareness of this issue and how CIS and the community be engaged in the solution. In addition to benefits listed a housing stipend may be provided as well as suport to find affordable housing or roommate. Member will also qualify for food assistance, work related mileage reimbursement, bus card and connection to other VISTA member gatherings and trainings in the area.
