MediCorps - Project Development Coordinator (2)

The Corporation for Ohio Appalachian Development, through its RSVP of the Ohio Valley program, seeks to address critical community needs through recruitment and management of senior volunteers in the southeastern Ohio region whose skills and expertise are used to help bring focus and solutions to these problems. Our long-term goal includes the development of infrastructure and resources, including volunteers, for specific, sustainable and enduring efforts related to poverty elimination as a result, directly or indirectly, of the harmful effects of drug addiction. COAD/RSVP of the Ohio Valley plans to engage two VISTA members in program development efforts to address the pervasive drug addiction problem which has grown exponentially in the area in the past two decades. Opiates, particularly with the onset of heroin use, have become entrenched into the illicit drug culture of the area, further exacerbating the already high levels of poverty and its impacts on the well being of the community. Program goals will be to create one new project, and to enhance another project which is in its early stages of development. The new project to be created will be a Kinship Care support group which will develop resources, provide training, and offer opportunities for grandparents and other older adults who are raising children as a result of the parents' drug use, incarceration, or other inabilities to care for these children. The second project will be to create a sustainable infrastructure for the county-level anti-drug coalitions which are currently in infancy stage, working in collaborative partnership with our local (Gallia-Jackson-Meigs) Board of Alcohol, Drug Addiction, and Mental Health Services and its contract agencies, to ensure that the coalitions have a solid foundation from which to build, using the proven Strategic Prevention Framework, and that successful recruiting efforts take place to create coalitions that serve a broad spectrum of the community.
