MediCorps - Clinic Community Officer

SOAR (Student Outreach to Area Residents) is a student-run free clinic providing high quality, non-emergent, no-cost health care to the uninsured, underinsured and medically underserved residents of Portage County and the surrounding areas in northeast Ohio. SOAR student run free clinic encourages a model of inter-professional treatment of patients that combines multiple disciplines of health practitioners who work in tandem to provide a high level of care to the most vulnerable patients in Northeast Ohio. At every clinic, there are licensed physicians and pharmacists that supervise and direct medical students, pharmacy students and public health students. This approach is developing future health care providers at the onset of their professional training to be culturally sensitive and aware of the vulnerable populations that may have challenges with access to and navigation of our current health care system. SOAR is currently developing partnerships with multiple healthcare institutions including Cleveland Clinic Akron General, Summa Health Systems, Aultman Hospital, St. Elizabeth’s in Youngstown, and AxessPointe Community Health Center. We promote future development and revitalization of healthcare systems for vulnerable populations by increasing access to care for citizens of Portage County and the surrounding areas and to bolster our future healthcare providers to be healthcare leaders in the communities in which they ultimately work. By increasing access to primary healthcare, research shows a decrease in emergency room utilization by vulnerable populations and better compliance with disease and medication management in patients who receive continuity of care.
