*Goodwill VISTA* LearningWorks, Portland

LearningWorks is a grassroots nonprofit organization that has been serving marginalized families and individuals in greater Portland, Maine for 50 years. The mission of LearningWorks is to reimagine learning through innovative programs that help children, adults, and families realize their potential and build thriving communities. We offer five programs for community members of all ages who fall into the margins of traditional education systems. Our programs address the needs of under-served and disenfranchised youth, families, immigrants, and refugees by providing educational, work readiness, and restorative justice services that are of the highest quality, responsive to the needs of our individual students and the community, and have clearly measurable outcomes that place our students on the pathway to success. Our English Language + Literacy Program (EL&LP) offers English language and literacy instruction to Maine’s immigrant, refugee and asylum seeking community through intensive classroom and individualized support tailored to students’ employment and educational goals. EL+LP offers classroom instruction to approximately 30 students, and tutoring to approximately 45 students. 100% of EL+LP’s classroom and tutoring instruction is provided by volunteers. More information can be found at http://learningworks.me.

Member Duties : The AmeriCorps VISTA member will build capacity by expanding the roster of active EL+LP program volunteers, developing relationships with community stakeholders to elicit feedback regarding EL+LP’s impact, creating tools for the agency to collect data on EL+LP deliverables, and creating a means for the agency to communicate with volunteers to enhance their sense of community, professional development, and connection to the program. The AmeriCorps VISTA member will develop and maintain volunteer recruitment and management plans, improve volunteer training, enrichment, and communication practices, design and implement strategies to make the tutoring program more efficient and sustainable, maintain databases and tracking processes for stakeholders, volunteers, and student progress, and maintain a communication system so the agency can keep volunteers apprised of program news, resources, challenges, and successes, and provide operational support to the EL + LP’s volunteer teachers.
