Stewards VISTA: Colorado Canyons - Uncompahgre Field Office
A significant portion of this project will be developing and creating curriculum, in addition to educational materials that will be used to implement our stewardship and program expansion for outdoor and in-classroom education. This project will reach school-aged children up to retirees through educational opportunities. It will provide school-aged students with basic knowledge of stewardship values and experiences in the outdoors. It will provide older high school students with valuable information on careers in natural resource management, land management, and recreation. The VISTA will address sources of poverty by providing STEM-based educational experiences for K-12 students, field trips with public lands professionals, and valuable information on leadership development and exposure to careers in the outdoor industry. Working within the growing Spanish speaking population and under-served schools of Delta and Montrose Counties, the VISTA will help develop a better understanding of how to engage students to be more connected to their public lands. This will be an opportunity to formalize our programs and expand our capacity to reach a greater number of students through CCA’s education programs. Additionally, the VISTA will work in close collaboration with the UFO staff to increase awareness about the, free to visit, National Conservation Areas (NCAs) through creation of interpretive materials and conveyance of visitor services. This project will aid in developing CCA’s relationship with the BLM’s UFO in Montrose, CO to increase our presence and achievements throughout all the NCA’s in western Colorado.

The VISTA will work with CCA’s Educational Director to develop a mobile educational kit with focus on the ancient Eagle Rock Shelter, for use in local schools. The VISTA will help to develop and implement educational programming within the Delta and Montrose areas.
