ReUse Industries VISTA

The ReUse Industries-Athens MakerSpace VISTA project will support the development of an innovative workforce training program called Make Your Future to provide work experience, training and learning opportunities for low-income individuals through retail, product-making and makerspace project activities. The VISTA Member will gain invaluable experience in a unique and dynamic non-profit social enterprise dedicated to community-based economic development. ReUse is a non-profit social enterprise located in Athens, OH, with venues including two retail sites providing used goods; an online store (etsy) providing vintage and high-end fabric; and Athens MakerSpace, a newly-established 5,000 square-foot facility providing workspaces, tools and classes to help local and regional individuals develop new hands-on skills and income-generating ventures via multiple creative disciplines including woodworking, metalworking, fabric-fiber arts, electronics and several forms of digital design and fabrication (such as 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC routing and dye-sublimation printing). The Americorps*VISTA Member will help ReUse develop and launch a new employment training program called Make Your Future. This program will provide work experience and employment training to low-income individuals seeking to build work histories and skills to help them access and succeed in new employment opportunities. The program will have three tracks – retail, product-making and makerspace project – intended to provide a well-rounded experience and a range of skills to trainees, in turn improving trainee capacity to obtain and succeed in employment opportunities. The Member will help develop, pilot and improve training materials and procedures, hands-on making projects, and approaches such as micro-credentials and portfolios to help trainees demonstrate their skills and accomplishments to prospective employers.
