Community Food Initiatives Sustainable Programming VISTA

An innovative, mission-driven, organization with deep community roots, Community Food Initiatives (CFI) believes the most effective way to increase food security is to develop locally-based models that are truly community driven. CFI fosters communities where everyone has equitable access to healthy, local food. The VISTA will increase access to fresh and healthy foods to low-income individuals by supporting sustainable expansion of CFI’s successful Veggie Van, Donation Station, and garden-based local food access programs into small and rural communities. By focusing on providing equitable access to healthy, fresh, locally produced food, CFI programs support individual and community well-being, environmental health, and economic vitality by utilizing the fundamental resource of our local food system to build community wellness and return investment back to our local farming economy. The CFI VISTA will work with community members and organizations such as libraries, food pantries, healthcare centers, churches, schools, and farmers markets to understand the needs and opportunities in rural communities within CFI’s service area. The VISTA will use that information to develop new collaborations and create a sustainable program expansion plan. The VISTA will also work with CFI staff to make and share training manuals and program guides, develop funding partnerships, and explore the integration of SNAP benefit education into our existing mobile market food access model --all resulting in greater access to fresh, healthy food for people in our service area and beyond.
