LCCT: So. TX Literacy Co- Assoc. of Programming & Outreach

The South Texas Literacy Coalition envisions South Texas as a region where every child and adult is a life-long learner skilled with the highest levels of literacy. The mission of the STLC is to enhance and enrich the quality of life of our region with literacy outreach programming through community partnerships that lead to more literate communities. The South Texas Literacy Coalition is research-based and strives to bring awareness to and enhance the literacy services in every community it serves. With a literacy rate of 58% in South Texas, we are challenged with the responsibility of advocacy and professional development for literacy providers and volunteer teachers. Our featured outreach project is the South Texas Reading Initiative, a book-distribution project designed to provide books for children and students whose parents find it financially challenging to purchase books and print materials for the home. In addition we address community needs such as financial education and health literacy with community partners. STLC also partners with local universities for events and resources, sponsors local events, coordinates programming and collaborates with local programs to enhance mutual goals and initiatives.
