LCCT: Literacy Advance- Program Support Specialist

Adult Literacy Classes: Central to our activities since our founding in 1964 are our adult literacy classes. Classes are for English-speakers who need to improve their reading (Adult Basic Education, or ABE), or for newcomers to the United States looking to improve their understanding of English and ability to speak to those around them (English as a Second Language, or ESL). ABE students receive one-to-one assistance with basic reading, writing, spelling, and grammar, while ESL students form learning communities with small groups of other adults at similar language levels to work together on conversation, listening skills, comprehension, and cultural knowledge. Trained volunteer tutors lead all of these classes and incorporate the personal learning goals of the students into each lesson, focusing on practical help and life skills through increased literacy. Workforce Development and Transition Services: Literacy Advance Transition staff meet one-to-one with adult students to offer employment coaching and referrals to external community resources, and coordinate a robust schedule of supplemental classes. These include computer literacy, math, and work-readiness classes that prepare students for success in today’s workforce. Family Engagement: Literacy Advance offers support services focused on the literacy needs of parents. Classes with specialized curriculum empower parents to take an active role in their children’s education, interact with the schools, and assist with homework, thus breaking the cycle of low literacy for the next generation. Literacy Advance helps adult learners at our main west Houston location and at satellite campuses in the United Way Service Centers in the Bay Area and Waller County. We collaborate with other nonprofits, schools, community centers, and libraries to ensure the best possible delivery of literacy services across Houston.
