Program and Development Coordinator

Approximately 16% of adults in central Arkansas struggle with basic reading and writing skills. These individuals experience difficulties when filling out a job application, understanding a prescription label, or reading a bedtime story to their children. Adult literacy is a factor in almost every socioeconomic issue, including parenting, healthcare, workforce development, and poverty. Adult education helps break the cycle of intergenerational illiteracy and poverty by giving adults the skills they need to be successful as workers and parents. Literacy Action has worked hard since 1986 to teach literacy skills to struggling readers in the central Arkansas area. We have offices in Little Rock and Conway, but serve students from a seven-county area. Literacy Action uses a one-on-one tutoring model for Adult Basic Literacy instruction and a group conversation model for English as a Second Language instruction. Learning to read or speak English enables our students to get family-supporting jobs, have better access to health information, and teach their children the value of literacy. The Program and Development Coordinator will be responsible for supporting all Literacy Action programs. In addition to supporting the Adult Program Director, this VISTA position will also provide direct support for the Development Director in all fundraising activities. This VISTA is responsible for recruiting and training volunteer literacy tutors, intaking students, tracking tutor hours, data entry, and database management. This VISTA will educate and expand our supporters, create content for social media, provide support for all fundraising campaigns and events. The position offers an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience in community outreach, project management, volunteer management, use of social media tools for non-profit organizations, fundraising/grant writing to support programmatic work, and non-profit administration.
