VISTA: Mountain Studies Institute
MSI and our VISTA will strive to alleviate poverty and support the region by: (1) developing the Bridging Mountains Network to unite youth development programs in Silverton and neighboring communities, (2) coordinating a monitoring network and service programs in those communities, and (3) developing programs to advance civic and environmental literacy, academic enrichment, service learning, and career and technical experiences. Year 1: MSI worked with regional stakeholders to develop a San Juan Needs Assessment to define community needs for youth development, science needs, education opportunities, and partnerships. We initiated program planning for bridging needs and interests of five counties to provide an integrated, technologically-connected education and monitoring plan. We built our successful partnership, San Juan Mining and Reclamation Conference, and education network, My Water Comes from the San Juan Mountains. We developed the Silverton Innovation Expo further advance the mine remediation technology and drive economic growth. Year 2: We will develop an integrated monitoring network to provide data, share information, research issues, and engage affected stakeholders in hands-on learning, service and civic programs. The VISTA will build regional capacity with San Juan schools and communities to support their youth and to establish the value of the region and mountains as a living laboratory and classroom for economic development and technology innovation in Silverton. Year 3: The Bridging Mountain Network will engage stakeholders in a systematic evaluation of the initial pilot, to improve the program and technology interfaces developed for this program. These evaluations will be conducted in all five target counties and will allow MSI to further strengthen strategic planning processes, respond to relevant community needs and outreach with collaboratively-generated science to better inform local and regional decision making.
