VISTA: Western Slope Healthy Forests Initiative

The VISTA program will catalyze the development of a diverse public-land-based economy in Delta County, CO, one of the 15th poorest counties in the state. For many decades, the local economy was based on coal mining. With recent declines in coal production, however, the communities of Delta County are seeing a renaissance in recreation, tourism, and organic agriculture. This program will support the strengthening of these local economies, as well as connect local youth with possible employment, by meeting the following identified needs: 1) to educate local youth about the value of healthy public lands within our watershed. To engage these youth in substantive US Forest Service and BLM management processes which will determine long-term ecosystem health for our region; 2) to build collaborative partnerships between local citizens and local , state and federal agencies as planning and implementation begins for landscape-level reclamation, restoration, and management of public and private lands within our watershed. Relevant entities include but are not limited to the Office of Surface Mining and Reclamation, the Bureau of Reclamation, the US Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, Colorado Division of Reclamation Mining and Safety, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, and Delta County institutions including the Delta County School District, Delta County Economic Development. 3) to build momentum for a recreation economy in the region by supporting local collaborative efforts to improve access to our rivers and public lands, increase public support for responsible recreation resource development, and build capacity to promote our local recreational assets to communities beyond our watershed. This position will be based in Paonia, CO.
